Abstract : A photoreduction of CO2 gas catalyzed by TiO2 powder has been studied with purpose to form methane as well as to prevent global warming. The photoreduction was carried out in a batch horizontal column that is by irradiating a mixture of 1 L CO2 with 1 L water vapor in the presence of TiO2 powder for a period of time. Gasses produced were analyzed by gas chromatography method. In this study, the effects of reaction time and TiO2 mass on the results have been evaluated. The research results indicate that photoreduction of CO2 with water vapor catalyzed by TiO2 has yielded several products, including methane, formaldehyde, ethylene, and acetilene. Methane as an targeted product can be obtained from the photoreduction of CO2 by using 100 g for 12, 24 and 48h of the reaction times. The unexpected product formaldehyde is resulted by a reaction carried out using 50 g TiO2 for 12 h. It dissapears when the reaction time was extended to 24 and 48 h, instead the valuable side products that are ethylene and acetilene are formed. Ethylene is yielded from the reaction using 25, 50, and 100 g of TiO2 with 24 h of the reaction time, and acetilene is resulted from the reaction carried out by using 50 g TiO2 with 48 h of the reaction time.
