Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Population Health, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Gadjah Mada Growing formal and informal industries have created employment opportunities for young people in many developing countries. Consumption of alcohol is one of the social activities that grow in line with this new young people with independent income. This paper examines how the civil society and local government perceive the alcohol consumption behaviour in Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia and public health actions and policies that we can learn from the three countries. It is striking to see that alcohol drinking behaviour among young workers in the three countries have been influenced by the national and multinational industries that use workers income to strengthen their financial gain. The policy response in the three countries are almost the same. Civil society consider the alcohol consumption behaviour as something social and normal. They fail to address problems related to productivity and public health. Meanwhile, public health agencies do not put this issue in their in the priority list. Policy development and advocacy at the level of local residents, local governments, and national level relating to alcohol industry should become agenda for the three countries. |
