Abstract : Nation-state has become a general format for political communities following global waves of decolonisation in the early 20th century. As consequence, many Muslim-majority societies faces contentious visions whether their new states are built through the category of ummah or nation. While Kemalism reforms in post-caliphate Turkey becomes a political imaginary among Indonesia’s founding fathers, their respective articulations and orientations are sharply diverged. Using the concept of hegemony as developed in the Political Discourse Theory (PDT), it is argued that the articulations of Kemalism in this country should not be seen as an imported ideological product but a distinct vision for nation-state building projects. Unlike Turkish experiences that fundamentally signified by decentering Islam from political scence, Kemalism in Indonesia is articulated as a prerequiste for managing multicultural societies and national integration.
