Abstract : After working for few years in companies, highly performing engineers would eventually be promoted to a higher organizational ladder. The new jobs and responsibilities come with inherently new opportunities and challenges. Evidence shows that many ‘bright’ engineers seem to struggle with the transition to the first-time managers. This study provides initial accounts on notable insights pertaining to such a transitional phase within the specific context of Indonesia. A qualitative study is carried out by means of a structured survey with the targeted respondents of Indonesian first-time managers whose background come from a variety of engineering disciplines. Four major topics are inquired, namely: (a) meaning, (b) expectations, (c) challenges, and (d) counter measures. Forty one datasets are deemed usable for analysis. Compelling evidence shows that distinctive patterns emerge from more and less effective transition process – consistent with the elaborated major themes. The study could lay a foundation for more comprehensive, follow-on studies which would eventually contribute to systematic development of human capability of engineers on becoming effective leaders/managers within an Indonesia context.
