Abstract : Separation and characterization of clay content in Gamalama volcanic soil have been carried out. The soil was taken from 5 different locations around the volcano at three different depths from the soil surface. The clay was a colloid layer formed after immersing the soil sample in water for 24 h. The small floating particles were separated from the mixture and collected using a centrifuge at 5000 rpm for 30 minutes. XRD results showed the presence of nanoclays of halloysite, allophane, and kaolinite. Morphology analysis by SEM and TEM of some representative samples showed short tubes with 10-20 nm diameter and length of 50-100 nm of halloysite structure. Halloysite was found at 70 cm depth from the soil surface at almost all locations. The surface area determined by the surface area analyzer using the BET equation was as high as 112.51 m2/g. This surface area is supposed to be the highest ever determined for natural nanoclay, paving the way to a future application for catalyst or photocatalyst supporting materials.
