| Abstract | : | Objectives: This study aims to identify the interaction of smoking and alcohol drinking for dental caries among diabetes patients. Methods: This cross-sectional study used secondary data collected from the 2018 Indonesia Basic Health Research (Riskesdas). The study population consisted of 1.004 diabetes patients diagnosed by a doctor aged ≥15 years, from all 34 provinces. The decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) index was used to assess dental caries. The behavioral factors included in this study were smoking, alcohol drinking, oral hygiene, fruit/vegetable consumption, and physical activity. A multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to explore the relationships between behavioral factors and dental caries. In addition to smoking and alcohol drinking interaction testing, RERI, AP, and S calculations provide additional measurements. Results: Of diabetes patients aged ≥15, 15.39% had severe dental caries (DMFT score ≥10), 15.07% were current smokers, 0.90% were alcohol drinkers, 97.13% had inadequate oral hygiene practices, 97.85% had less fruit and vegetable consumption, and 59.58% engaged in moderate PA. According to the multivariate analysis, current smokers (AOR 1.87; 95% CI: 1.86–1.89) and alcohol drinkers (AOR 6.35; 95% CI: 6.22-6.49) had higher odds of severe dental caries. There is an interaction between the variables of smoking and alcohol against severe dental caries. Conclusions: It is hoped that the measurement of behavioral risk factors and interaction in this study will increase awareness among the target population, dental health service providers, and general health service providers for the efficiency of diabetes prevention and patient care programs. |
