| Abstract | : | Background: The percentage of exclusive breastfeeding in infants aged 0 month is 39.8% while in infants aged 5 months the percentage of exclusive breastfeeding is only 15.3%. According to Riskesdas in 2018, the average of exclusive breastfeeding until the age of 6 months is 37.3%. This is still far from the average target of 80%. Aim: This study aimed to determine the effect of giving postpartum counseling on the practice of exclusive breastfeeding in Indonesia. Method: This study used data of the Indonesian Demographic and Health Survey (IDHS) from 2017 with a retrospective cohort design. The sample used was 258 infants aged 6 months, according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The effect of postpartum counseling on the practice of exclusive breastfeeding was analyzed with chi-square statistical tests to see the effect between each variable and calculate the value of the Risk Ratio (RR) with 95% confidence interval (CI). Logistic regression procedure was used to analyse the Adjusted Odds Ratio. Results: The percentage receiving exclusive breastfeeding was 18.8% and getting postpartum counseling was 59.7%. There is no effect between postpartum counseling to exclusive breastfeeding (p> 0.05). There is a significant effect between pacifier usage and maternal residence. Conclusion: Postpartum counseling of breastfeeding lacks having a significant effect on exclusive breastfeeding. Therefore, the government needs to conduct an evaluation related to the implementation of counseling which has been recently running. |
