Title : Sites of Violence, Sites of Peace: Locating Memories and Responsibilities for Everyday Violence in Indonesia
Author :
Date : 2018
Abstract : The project aims to understand how vulnerable communities in Yogyakarta (and then Melbourne) spatially emplace memories of everyday suffering. It seeks to use spatial theory to better understand the experience of societal injustice and to develop innovative ways to make it visible to the public, thereby enabling better social, political and legal responses to it. The pilot phase will focus on three Yogyakarta communities that experience day-to-day violence and suffering: survivors of the 1965 massacre, religious minorities, and the LGBTQ community. Community members will be invited to create and discuss alternative city tours of Yogyakarta that landmark sites of everyday suffering. The tours will be used as a teaching tool in our joint subject. The project will also produce academic outputs and practical maps and tours of Yogyakarta that can start to deepen scholarly and public engagement with spatially embedded experiences of inequality and exclusion.
