Abstract : An optical sensor for colorimetric detection of Fe(II) has been synthesized by immobilizing 1,10-phenanthroline into alginate/pectin films. The films were characterized using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR). Optimal conditions for detection and validation of method parameters was carried out by measuring the absorbance of the films using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The color change of the alginate/pectin-phenanthroline film from transparent yellow to orange-red showed its potential application for visual colorimetric detection of Fe(II). The optimum absorbance of the film was measured at 513 nm after detection for 2 minutes at pH 2. Alginate/pectin-phenanthroline film has good linearity, precision, selectivity and accuracy with a detection limit as low as 0.333 mg L–1
