| Abstract | : | Background: Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) provides numerous health benefits to children health, nonetheless, the rate is unsatisfactory among young mothers since they often experience difficulties during this phase. Thus, intervention during the postnatal period is imperative to encourage EBF practice among these populations. Postnatal care (PNC) should be delivered appropriately to attain a positive postnatal experience, but there has been little discussion of the evidence. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the association between proper PNC and EBF practice among Indonesian young mothers Methods: A cross-sectional study design utilizing data from Indonesia Demographic Health Survey 2017 was conducted to answer its objective. All mothers aged 15–24 years old who delivered a last-born infant within two years preceding the survey were included. Mother was considered to be visiting PNC properly if she started breastfeeding soon after delivery, attended PNC within two days after giving birth, and received breastfeeding counselling and observation during PNC visit. Results: Around 51% of infants under six months old born to young mothers aged 15-24 were exclusively breastfed. Proper PNC was only found in around 24% of the total population. The correlation between proper PNC and EBF practice was significant among adolescent mothers aged 15–19 after performing age-stratification analysis (OR: 8.22; 95%CI: 1.957 - 34.524). Maternal age group became a noticeable confounder after performing a risk-stratification analysis. Conclusion: Our findings imply the importance of breastfeeding service delivery during the early postnatal period for maintaining EBF practice. Ensuring the quality of PNC is beneficial in delivering positive postnatal experience, particularly among adolescent mothers. |
