Abstract : This study evaluated the formation steps of Graphene Oxide (GO) material from graphite precursors also the amount of permanganate as an oxidizing agent to graphite and its effect on the character and chemical structure of GO produced. The synthesis of GO material with the variations in the permanganate/graphite ratio of 0.5, 2.0, and 3.5 was carried out using the modified improved Hummers method. All materials produced were characterized using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), UV-Visible Spectrophotometer, Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) Spectrophotometer, and Transmission Electron Microscope-Selected Area Electron Diffraction (TEM-SAED). The results obtained were GO-0.5 had not been oxidized with two diffraction peaks similar to the graphite of 43.524 and 26.235, GO-2.0 had been partially oxidized with 3 diffraction peaks of 42.489, 26.163, and 11.522, and GO-3.5 had been fully oxidized successfully with 2 diffraction peaks of 42.460 and 10.457. GO-3.5 had vibrational peaks of oxygen functional groups such as hydroxyl, epoxy, carboxyl, and carbonyl in FTIR spectra, also it had wavelength absorption at 233 nm associated with the transition ???* of the C=C bond and at ~300 nm related to the n??* transition of the C=O bond. This GO-3.5 ratio can be utilized for large scale GO synthesis because it can reduce production cost. Moreover, the synthesis method used was also safe (non- toxic and non-exothermic) so according to the principles of green chemistry.
