Abstract : Depression is a mental health condition characterized by changes in an individual’s emotions, thought patterns, and behavior. The magnitude of the parental influence on symptoms of early adolescent depression requires active communication between parents who can provide positive emotional encouragement to early adolescents aged 10-14 years. This study aimed to identify the risk factors for poor parental interpersonal communication on the symptoms of early adolescent depression by considering socio-ecological factors. This cross-sectional study was conducted with observational research methods using secondary data from the Global Early Adolescent Study (GEAS)-Indonesia 2018. The sample included 7th grade junior high school students aged 10-14 years who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria totaling 3,441 subjects (boys = 1,573, girls = 1,868). Multivariable logistic regression analysis used calculations of odds ratio (OR) value with 95% confidence interval (CI). Factors associated with adolescents experiencing symptoms of depression were male adolescents city of Bandar Lampung [OR: 1.60; 95% CI:1.33-1.92], and the city of Denpasar [OR: 1.67; 95% CI: 1.41-1.98], had 1-3 male friends [OR: 169; 95% CI: 1.38-2.08], had >3 male friends [OR: 1.82 ; 95% CI: 1.47-2.26], victims of bullying [OR: 1.47 ; 95% CI: 1.26-1.73], bullies [OR:1.64; 95% CI:1.02-2.63], victims and perpetrators of bullying [OR: 1.77 ; 95% CI: 1.41-2.22], and neighborhoods [OR: 1.77; 95% CI: 1.41-2.22]. Adolescents who communicate poorly with their parents are more likely to experience symptoms of depression than adolescents who communicate well with their parents. Cooperate in preventing and controlling violence against adolescents in the immediate environment by implementing Community-Based Integrated Child Protection (PATBM) and Roots.
