Abstract | : | Background: Emotional distress experienced by diabetic patients can affect glycemic control and quality of life. However, limited available tool in Indonesia to detect emotional distress in patients with diabetes (PWD) in clinical setting or research. This study aimed to evaluate validity and reliability of the Indonesia version of Problem Areas in Diabetes (PAIDI)-5. Methods: Cross-cultural adaptation method was conducted and psychometric tests were collected at hospital by involving adult 100 diabetic patients. All PWD, with no proof of mental health record or dementia were voluntarily included. Content and construct validity and internal consistency were used to evaluate the psychometric properties. Results: The mean age was 61.2 year in which men and women equally participated in the study and mostly were non-working patients. The PAIDI-5 resulted five items of question to identify the emotional distress in Indonesian language. The minor modification was done in item four and five after discussiing with original authors and expert in Indonesia. The results showed item content validity index (I-CVI) and scale/S-CVI was 0.6-0.8 and 0.72, respectively. The calculated r value ranged from 0.751 to 0.888, indicated higher than the r table (0.197). The Cronbach alpha of Indonesia version of PAIDI-5 was 0.87 with inter-item and item-total correlation was 0.43-0.71 and 0.61-0.79, respectively. Conclusion: The study indicates that PAIDI-5 is valid and reliable to assess emotional distress among PWD and prospective in clinical setting or research aims. Future assessment of emotional distress is applicable and help patients to deal with their emotional distress. |
